Notes:
Interesting experiment here as Presbyterian ministry from Toronto seeks to discuss spiritual questions with people from a variety of backgrounds (including non-Christians) through the medium of music. The end result is sort of a musical equivalent of a rap session, with lyrics that reveal a search for meaning yet also express the Christian response. Don’t let the word “community” scare you off – this isn’t a big massive choral production or anything. There are eleven people listed in the instrumental credits, plus another five providing the vocals. The Avant Garde label certainly lives up to its name on this release with not only rock and folk styles, but also jazz, psychedelia, and bizarre poetry readings (check out the hip ‘The Wart Where It Was’). Horns are used effectively in parts, though thankfully they’re usually playing second billing to the organ and electric guitar. Psychedelic guitar noodling intermingles with spacey washes of organ on the album’s centerpiece: the thirteen-minute ‘Genesis’, an avant-garde ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’-influenced composition structured around three cosmic spoken passages identified as Fluctuations 1, 2 and 3 (note how they work in the melodies from ‘Jesus Loves Me’ and ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’). Fish Co. is the duo of fellow Englishmen Steve Rowles and Steve Fairnie. Fairnie (and sometimes Rowles) would go on to create progressively more bizarre and strange music under various names, including Writz, Famous Names, The Techno Twins, The Techno Orchestra and The Technos. As Fish Co. they produced some excellent insightful and intelligent British rock, folk, pop and ballads. Several songs on Can’t Be Bad are based on slice-of-life characters – titles like ‘Jimmy Bootlace Seller’, ‘Matthew’, ‘Soup And Whisky’ and ‘Broken Dream’. Nice folky acoustic feel to a lot of the tracks, offset with a few decidedly rock-edged cuts like ‘60s Children’ and ‘Beautiful Secret’, the latter with a biting electric guitar lead. The Steves supply the acoustic guitars, vocals and song-writing, assisted by others on piano, lead guitar, saxophone, bass and drums.   (The Archivist, 4th edition  by Ken Scott).

Superb Kentucky custom from the trio of Richard Broaddus, Ron Houtz and Mike Price. Sincere homemade rural feel with some west-coast hippie vibes, including simple acoustic songs with harmonica (‘We Love You’), lyrical piano/guitar melodies (‘Life Is More’, ‘Not In New York City’), twangy acoustic country (‘Light On A Hill’) and jangly electric folkrock (‘So Glad Ya Made It’). Some great plugged-in rural rock moves on ‘I’d Have To Be Crazy, Parts 1 & 4’ and ‘Changes’, peaking with the 9:20 multi-faceted ‘Ajax Revisited’ in three movements. Good hard rock fuzz action on ‘High Times, Low Times’, psychy phasing on the edgy ‘Jesus Is Love’. Subtle female backing vocals from time to time. The guys called themselves Latter Rain from 1972 to 1977, then changed their name because of the other Kentucky Latter Rain group. This Michigan male/female melodic hard rock group could have kicked some formidable butt on the Tunesmith label if they’d had the chance.   Their custom recording has a catchy cheerful disposition, boasting strong production, fresh spirited original tunes, jammin’ keyboards (piano, electric piano, organ, synth), and buzzin guitar action.  They get pretty mean on ‘Are You Ready For Heaven’ where they rip away Molly Hatchet style.  The femme vocals on power ballads like ‘My Choice’ and ‘Don’t You Care’ remind me of Living Sacrifice Band.  Other titles include ‘Movin’ On Up’, ‘The Lion Within’, ‘Thank You Father’, ‘Seek The Lord’, ‘Turn And Believe’, ten songs in all.  Not necessarily an ’80’s sound as the music is laced with progressive and classic rock overtones.     (The Archivist by Ken Scott, 4th Edition)
